Fred Ford had two Syretts on the books at the County Ground in the early seventies. One, Peter Syrett, failed to break into the first team. Peter's brother, David, however, was an English youth international, and had a far more successful career at the club.

Syrett made his first team debut versus Preston in September 1973. The next month, he started his first game, in a 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest. He went on to score four goals in his first season for the club, in a year which resulted in relegation.

The following season, Syrett was overshadowed by the goalscoring exploits of 31-goal Peter Eastoe, which resulted in Syrett leaving for a loan spell at Wolves in late 1975. He didn't play a game at Molineux, but when he returned he was on fire - scoring five goals in as many games at the beginning of 1976.

In his final season, Syrett scored just eight league goals, but he scored in every round of the Town's cup run - six goals in as many games. During the summer, Mansfield Town paid a club record fee of £25,000 for Syrett's services, where he became the club's top scorer.

After spells at Walsall, Peterborough and Northampton, Syrett retired through injury in 1983, aged just 27.
