One of six goalkeepers registered in Swindon's 1993/94 season along with Fraser Digby, Nicky Hammond, Paul Heald and the unused Stewart Kerr and Shane Cook, Sheffield joined on loan from lower league Cambridge United in February, and played two matches - in a 5-0 away loss at Aston Villa and a 3-3 draw against Norwich City at the County Ground. In this second match, he too succumbed to Swindon's goalkeeping jinx that season, having to leave the field through injury, and being replaced by Nicky Hammond.
