Rose was a goalkeeper, who played for the Town before the club turned professional. He was the first Swindon player to win international honours, making his debut for England in an 8-1 win over Ireland in February 1884. During that same season, Rose was appointed team captain, and he went on to win a total of five caps. In the fourteen friendly matches played, the Town scored 53 goals - at the other end, Rose conceded only eight.

Later in his career, Rose was to win an FA Cup winners medal with Wolves, when they beat Everton 1-0 in the 1893 final. He was also the first player to propose the formation of a Player's Union.
