After a prolonged transfer saga, Robinson was finally signed for £50,000 from Birmingham in February 2001, and he went straight into the starting line-up the following day - playing 109 minutes of an LDV Vans Trophy Semi-Final at Southend - the Shrimpers scoring a golden goal within a minute of Robinson leaving the pitch.

His arrival at the club coincided with a run of just one defeat in nine League games, which ultimately helped save the Town from relegation by the skin of their teeth. Robinson made himself a hit almost immediately, by scoring two spectacular volleys in a local derby at Oxford in March 2001 - the Town winning 2-0. It was some time before his next goal came, however - 22 months elapsed before Robinson found the net in a 5-2 win at Stockport in January 2003. By the end of the season, "Turbo" had clocked up over 100 appearances in a Town shirt.

A hard-working midfielder, Robinson found himself utilised in a right wing-back role at the start of the 2003/2004 season, before moving back to his usual midfield role with the switch to a 4-4-2 formation. Unfortunately, his season was cut short in late January, when a crunching tackle in a match at Blackpool left him with a broken fibula. At the end of the season, Robinson was offered a new year's deal, with the proviso that he returned early to pre-season training.

Robinson spent the first half of the 2004/05 season in and out of the first team, but around Christmas, it became apparent that he wouldn't be offered a new contract at the end of the campaign. A proposed move to Notts County, the club that Robinson supported, seemed to be arranged, but it fell through following managerial changes at Meadow Lane, and he remained at the County Ground. Following this, Robinson was excused from training duties to allow him to find another club, but though he spent a few days training at Kidderminster and had a trial at Boston, no deal was forthcoming. Robinson later admitted that this was one of the lowest points of his career.

Surprisingly though, an end-of-season injury crisis led to a recall for Robinson, and over four months since his previous appearance in the first team, he came on for the last fifteen minutes of the last game against Chesterfield. He got a great reception - the fans remembering the goals at Oxford that endeared him to them four years previously - and Robinson later appeared in the Evening Advertiser to thank them for helping to rekindle his enthusiasm for the game.
