Ken Beamish brought Richardson to the club as a player/coach in July 1983. After just seven appearances, he obtained his FA coaching badge, prompting Beamish to leave him out of the side to concentrate on the coaching side.
When Lou Macari replaced Beamish the following season, he offered Richardson the chance to carry on playing - an offer that he refused. He left the club to join Swansea on a free transfer.
