Signed in September 2017 until the end of the season, former Walsall defender Preston bolstered Town’s defensive options after Dion Conroy picked up a season ending injury, leaving Town with the less than convincing pairing of Chris Robertson and Olly Lancashire. Unsurprisingly, he improved Town’s defence, contributing to a clean sheet on his debut against Cambridge United, and scored his first goal a week later at Cheltenham in a 2-1 defeat.
After Town’s 1-0 win over Mansfield Town in February, the Robins were fifth in the table and just two points off the automatic promotion places. Unfortunately, during that game Preston suffered a serious knee injury which would rule him out for the rest of the season - two weeks later, manager Flitcroft jumped ship to join Mansfield, and Town’s season fell apart, taking only 14 points from the last 14 games and slipping out of the playoffs to finish ninth.
Town offered Preston a three-year contract at the end of the season, but he instead chose to follow Flitcroft to Mansfield.
