Opara was signed from non-league Grays Athletic on a year's deal in June 2004, after impressing in matches for Swindon's reserve team late in the 2003/2004 season - the fee being dependent on the number of appearances made.

Having played in just one game for Swindon - a League Cup win over Rushden and Diamonds on 24th August, in which he was substituted - Opara decided to leave the club in September, citing the fact that he was unable to settle.
