Mutch signed during the opening stages of Swindon’s 1993/94 Premiership campaign from Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he had been part of a great strike partnership with Wolves goalscoring legend Steve Bull - Swindon boss John Gorman wanted Mutch to form a similar twosome with Norwegian international Jan Fjortoft.

Mutch made his debut in a live TV clash against Liverpool at the County Ground - the Town being thumped 5-0, and it was another five matches before he registered his first goal, when he scored the equaliser against Newcastle United in a 2-2 draw, the Town coming back from two goals down. His celebration of the goal - a cartwheel in front of the Geordie fans - made the opening credits of the BBC Match of the Day programme for the rest of the season - unfortunately, it also proved to be the highlight of Mutch's first season. Mutch himself proved to be better at moaning at linesmen than scoring goals, after scoring in the next game at Manchester United, he didn't register another goal for almost three months. His best run of goalscoring form came at the turn of the year, when he scored in consecutive games against Sheffield Wednesday, Chelsea and a last minute equaliser at Coventry - but this sequence came to an end at Everton, where he was sent off for a blatant elbowing offence. He didn't score again that season.

After Swindon's relegation, Mutch made twenty more league appearances the following season - most of which came from the substitutes bench, and he failed to score. His final goals for the Town came in January, when he netted twice in the Coca-Cola Cup Quarter-Final tie against Millwall, helping the Town into the Semi-Finals. He remained on the Town's books for another year, though didn't feature at all during the 1995/96 season - being loaned out to Wigan at the start of the campaign, and finally leaving to join Stockport on a free transfer in March 1996.
