Son of Liverpool legend Terry, former England under-18 international McDermott joined Swindon on a four month loan on the transfer deadline day in August 2005, after a last-gasp deal was agreed - having originally been reported on the club's official website as having missed the deadline. He made his debut for the Town as a late substitute in a 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth on 17th September, and was handed his full league debut by new manager Iffy Onuora in his first game in charge at Doncaster ten days later.
Though perhaps not the tough-tackling midfielder that the Town fans had been expecting, McDermott's stock with Town fans raised considerably when, after a short spell out through injury, he returned to net the equaliser in the local derby with Bristol City in November - his first ever league goal coming live in front of the Sky TV cameras, in a crucial game that the Town went on to win. From then on, with Onuora obviously a fan of his energy and determination, McDermott remained in and around the first team, until his loan expired at the end of December. Despite Onuora's best attempts to keep him, and though McDermott seemingly wanted to stay on, Fulham manager Chris Coleman requested that he return to Craven Cottage to be loaned out to a Championship club for the remainder of the season.
