Key was brought to Swindon by Lou Macari during the triumphant 1985-1986 season, amidst a goalkeeper dispute at the County Ground. When Macari signed Kenny Allen early into the campaign, the deal angered Scott Endersby, who had made the number one jersey his own during his first two seasons at the club. As Allen had featured in the Milk Cup already that season - ironically against Swindon - he was therefore cup-tied, and Endersby refused to play unless he was granted a free transfer by the club. Macari ignored the ultimatum and he instead signed Richard Key on a non-contract basis, specifically to play in the competition. Key made his debut in a fine 1-0 home victory against First Division Sheffield Wednesday in the third round, but his second match wasn't quite as impressive - the Town succumbing to a 6-1 thrashing at Ipswich. Shortly afterwards, Key returned to Brentford.
