A former England under-21 international, "Kers" signed for Swindon in November 1989, when Ossie Ardiles paid Q.P.R. £110,000 for his signature. He immediately established himself in the first team squad, replacing David Hockaday as an attacking right-sided full back.

His first season at the club was a success on the pitch, as the Town won promotion to Division One via the play-offs, only to have it taken away from them by the footballing authorities. He remained as a regular, reliable member of the side for almost three more years - by which time his consistent performances were alerting bigger clubs. As the transfer deadline approached in the 1992/1993 season, Kerslake moved to into the Premier League, signing for Leeds, who paid Swindon £½ million.

Kerslake made just eight appearances for Leeds, before Ardiles again signed him, this time signing for Tottenham early in the 1993/1994 season, where he joined up with fellow ex-Town legend Colin Calderwood. Once Ardiles had left Spurs, he found himself surplus to requirements under Gerry Francis, and the whole of the 1995/1996 and 1996/1997 seasons were spent on the sidelines.

The only first team football Kerslake got in this period was a short loan spell back at the County Ground, when Steve McMahon utilised him as a sweeper. After nearly two seasons of reserve team football, "Kers" had lost his match fitness, and had gained a few pounds in weight - a far cry from the attacking wing back the fans were used to.

It therefore came as somewhat of a surprise when McMahon re-signed Kerslake late in the following season. After a short spell at Ipswich and a loan period at Wycombe, "Kers" rejoined the Town on 11th March 1998, on a free transfer - five years to the day since he first left the club. He made 24 more appearances over the next calendar year, before leaving at the end of the 1998/1999 season to join Canvey Island.
