Town’s January 2024 transfer window was compromised by transfer restrictions imposed by the EFL, preventing them from paying any transfer fees after late payments to other clubs earlier in the season. In the circumstances, the signing of Paul Glatzel was a brilliant piece of work: coming towards the end of his contract with Liverpool, where he’d been part of the youth setup since the under 9s, Town were allowed to ‘take over’ his contract without paying a fee.

Glatzel came with a bit of pedigree behind him, including youth caps for England and Germany - the countries of his birth and his parents’ birth respectively - as well as two loan spells at Tranmere, but also a concerning injury record, having suffered a series of injuries his second loan at Tranmere which seriously impacted his development and played a significant role in bringing his time at Liverpool to an end. At the time, the general view was that he’d be a good signing if he could stay fit.

For the first five months at least, Swindon’s luck held as Glatzel stayed fit and looked better and better as he played more minutes through the season, culminating in six goals in his last ten games of the season.

Going into his first full season in red and white, Glatzel is expected to be a key player for Town: he’ll be looking to put his injury nightmare behind him and lead the League Two goalscoring charts.
