A mere 48 hours after Andy King was sacked, Evans was installed as the club's Director of Football, amidst confusing speculation that King was to be reinstated as manager.

Previously manager of Liverpool, Evans was a big-name signing for the Town, and his coaching methods on a limited budget led to a noticeable improvement in the standard of football at the County Ground.

Unfortunately, Evans' stay was short-lived. After Danny Donegan was ousted as chairman, the new board were installed, and it became apparent that Swindon were £3.5 million in debt with no money to spend on players. Evans said he couldn't take the club any further, and resigned - leaving the board to re-appoint the very man who he had replaced.
