There can’t have been many players whose career history reads Coventry City - Swindon Town - Atlético de Kolkata, but that was the path followed by versatile defender/midfielder Conor Thomas.

Thomas joined on a three-year deal ahead of the 2016/17 season and started the season as part of Town’s three man defence alongside Nathan Thompson and Jamie Sendles-White. Without being overly impressive, he remained involved in the first team through the opening months of the season largely on the back of his versatility, moving between centre back and central midfield regularly.

Thomas fell out of favour in the new year but returned to the starting lineup after more than three months without a start in late March, scoring the only goal in injury time to give Town a 1-0 win over Millwall and hope in their relegation struggle. He started all of Town’s final seven games of the season, but couldn’t do enough to prevent Town from being relegated from League One, taking just one point from their final five.

Thomas looked bright in pre-season ahead of Town’s first season back in League Two, but two substitute appearances and a start in the League Cup were the sum total of Thomas’ contribution before his contract was terminated by mutual consent, allowing him to move to India and sign for Atlético de Kolkata under the management of Teddy Sheringham.
