One of many inexperienced players to play for Swindon during the 1999/2000 season, Thirlwell was signed on loan from Sunderland in September 1999. Thirlwell managed to impress in a dire team, and was later rumoured to be considering a permanent return to the County Ground in the 2004/05 pre-season, before signing for Sheffield United.
