An England under-15 international, first called up to the senior squad during the 2002/03 season after some impressive performances in the youth team, Taylor made his debut as a late substitute in a 1-0 win at Crewe on 19th April 2003. He went on to make a total of four sub appearances by the end of the season.

Surprisingly, he was not given a squad number for the next two seasons, and in March 2005, he joined Conference South outfit Newport County on loan until the end of the season, prior to signing a one year professional contract at the County Ground. The following season, he again joined Newport, this time on a month's loan deal in August - before being released when his contract came to an end.
