Signed under controversial circumstances, Nicolau joined the Town in July 2005 under the Bosman ruling, after his previous chairman at Southend, Ron Martin, accused him of stalling on a deal offered to him by the Shrimpers. Southend withdrew their offer, and despite being entitled to compensation, he was allowed to leave on a free transfer, going on to make his debut as a late substitute with the Town 3-0 down at home to Oldham in the second game of the season. His introduction immediately gave the team some balance, and with two goals scored in quick succession, the Town almost completed an unlikely comeback. Nicolau's reward was a starting place for a 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest the following Saturday.

Unfortunately, injuries soon prevented Nicolau from making a lasting impression - firstly, a burst bursa in his knee kept him out for a period at the end of August, before a hernia repair operation in October sidelined him for the rest of the year. When he returned to action, new boss Iffy Onuora immediately sent him out on loan to Conference side Hereford for the rest of the season - and when that deal expired, he was allowed to leave the club, having made just six appearances for the Town.
