An Australian international despite being born in Glasgow, Glenn Hoddle signed journeyman centre forward Mitchell from Chelsea for £30,000, during the 1991/92 pre-season. He made his debut on the opening day of the season, a 0-0 draw with Leicester City on 17th August. An injury picked up in his second game kept him out for almost half of the season - he didn't reappear in a Town shirt until Boxing Day, when he came on as a substitute in a 1-1 draw at Bristol City. Once Mitchell had gained full fitness, he missed just one more game that year, making 31 appearances, scoring eight goals.
It was in the following season that Mitchell really made his mark at the club - the departure of Duncan Shearer saw him forge a new partnership with new signing Craig Maskell - Mitchell as the hard-working forward man who chased everything, Maskell the less workmanlike, poaching goalscorer. It worked well, with the Town earning a play-off place at the end of the season, and Mitchell chipped in with some vital goals - including a hat-trick in a memorable 6-4 win at Birmingham, in a match where the Town came back from 4-1 down, and the second goal in the first leg of the play-off final versus Tranmere, which put the Town 2-0 up.
The play-off final victory over Leicester proved to be Mitchell's last game for the club - he surprisingly invoked a clause in his contract which allowed him to join Altay of Turkey for a cut-price fee of £20,000, two years almost to the day since he had joined.
