Signed on loan in November 2012, initially until January, striker Martin admitted that his loan spell at Swindon was an ideal opportunity to put himself in the shop window, with his contract at Norwich coming to an end.

After making his debut in a 4-1 win over Yeovil two days after joining - coming on as a first half substitute for the injured Andy Williams, Martin made his full debut during the following week, in a 1-0 home defeat to Brentford. Though obviously unfit, Martin certainly showed the touch of a player who could play at a higher level, but his lack of goals failed to endear him to a section of the Town’s support, despite his spell coinciding with a superb run over the Christmas period.

By the time his initial deal expired at the turn of the year, Martin had still failed to find the net - the striker admitting his frustration at not finding the net, and that he would like to extend his loan, stating he had ‘unfinished business’ in front of goal. After boss Paolo di Canio declared that he would be willing to fund the loan extensions of Martin, John Bostock and Danny Hollands personally, Swindon agreed to a one month extension - and though Martin finally got off the mark with a penalty in a 2-0 win over Shrewsbury (the striker jumping into a huge pile of snow behind the goal to celebrate, after the game was nearly scuppered by the weather), off the pitch, the club was in turmoil, going through a takeover process. Though Martin stated he would be disappointed if he couldn’t stay for the rest of the season, it was revealed that the takeover would mean that his deal would not be extended, and he left the club at the beginning of February to return to Norwich.
