Originally a youth player at the club, Lapham was all set to swap football for a career in plumbing, having been told in December 2004 that a professional deal at Swindon was unlikely to be forthcoming, despite praise from youth coaches Iffy Onuora and Ian Woan. Surprisingly though, injuries to both Sean O'Hanlon and regular right-back Steve Jenkins at the end of April 2005 put Lapham into contention for a first team debut - and though Jenkins recovered sufficiently to be named in the starting line-up to face Huddersfield, a relapse in the pre-match warm-up thrust Lapham in for an unexpected debut. It was somewhat of a baptism of fire - with both David Duke and Rory Fallon being sent-off in the first half, and four Town youth teamers making their debuts throughout the match, Swindon capitulated in the second half, losing 4-0.
Nevertheless, Lapham was singled out for praise by manager Andy King, who said he "defended magnificently", and after helping the youth team win the Youth Alliance cup during the week, he was given another chance to shine in the first team in the final game of the season, a 1-1 home draw with Chesterfield. Again, Lapham performed well, and he was rewarded with an offer of a one year professional contract soon after the season ended - and also picked up the club's Young Player of the Year award.
A knee injury prevented Lapham from making any sort of impression at the start of the following season, and after not making an appearance in the first half of the season, new manager Iffy Onuora sent him out on loan to Cirencester Town at the end of January. His spell with the Centurions lasted for three months - when he returned to the County Ground for the beginning of May, he was told that he was surplus to requirements.
