Signed at the age of 28 and with a wealth of experience in the lower leagues, Olly Lancashire seemed like the perfect profile of centre half to spearhead Town’s attempt to return to League One at the first time of asking in 2017/18. New manager David Flitcroft handed him the captain’s armband and paired him with Dion Conroy for the 2-1 win at Carlisle on the first day of the new season.
As would happen repeatedly to Conroy, the partnership was ended by a serious injury to the ex-Chelsea man, and Lancashire was then paired with Chris Robertson, Matt Preston and Rollin Menayese over the course of a season where he played 35 of the 46 league games, missing all of March through injury. The next season, Lancashire’s Town career tailed off dramatically, with injury issues and Lancashire’s own poor form leading Town to bring in centre backs Luke Woolfenden and Sid Nelson on loan ahead of him.
When Lancashire did appear, an increasingly acrimonious relationship with his own fans suggested that his Town was coming to an end, and indeed, at the end of the 2018/19 season, he was released - joining Crewe Alexandra shortly afterwards.
