Signed on deadline day in the summer of 2022, Luke Jephcott was, on paper, an excellent signing to replace the outgoing Harry McKirdy. Despite being only 22, he’d already played more than 100 football league games for Plymouth and scored 33 goals, mostly in League One, and played for Wales U21s. Securing his services for Town ahead of competition from league leaders Leyton Orient seemed like a coup - and there was even a nice local angle, with Jephcott having been pictured attending the County Ground in a Swindon shirt in his younger days. The deal was initially a loan, but with an option - and at the time, an expectation - to buy in January.

Jephcott’s debut came off the bench away at Gillingham, and a full debut followed ten days later against Sutton. Jephcott’s Town spell started fairly well if not spectacularly, notching five goals across his first nine starts up until the end of October, settling in well up until the 5-2 win at Mansfield that sent Town up to fourth.

After that, things went cold for Jephcott and for Town. Jephcott didn’t score again in a Town shirt until a brace against AFC Wimbledon in late April, a drought of almost six months and eighteen appearances. When Charlie Austin signed in January, Jephcott was reduced to brief appearances from the bench as Town went through the motions for the remainder of the season, with the two goals in Town’s 5-1 victory against the Dons a real outlier on his general level of performance.

He was released by Plymouth at the end of the season, but did not return to Town, instead signing for St. Johnstone before returning to League Two with Newport in January 2024.
