After being rejected for the manager's position at Wolves in July, and a whole month of speculation, former England captain Ince finally signed for the Town in a player/coach role at the end of August 2006, despite receiving other offers from the likes of Birmingham, West Bromwich Albion, Peterborough and Walsall - the deciding factor in the decision seemingly being Ince's friendship with Town boss Dennis Wise.

Ince made his first appearance for the Town from the subs bench, coming on late in a 2-1 defeat at Wrexham in early September. His full debut came just three days later, when, though obviously not 100% fit, he gave a committed performance in a 2-1 win over MK Dons. The next match, a 1-0 defeat at home to Peterborough, proved to be Ince's last in a Town shirt - after being substituted at half time, it was reported that a virus kept him out the following week.

Behind the scenes though, it appeared that Ince's arrival had caused problems - and in the same week, investor Bill Power withdrew his money. As Ince seemed to disappear off the scene completely, it was announced that his contract had been terminated by mutual consent early in October, with Ince finding it impossible to commute to Swindon from his Cheshire home. Later on, chief executive Mark Devlin was accused of agreeing to the signing of Ince without the proper approval from the board - a major factor in the boardroom rift that forced Power out of the club.
