Brought in as a coach to assist Scott Lindsey but registered as a player, Gunning was allocated squad number 27 but was never named in a matchday squad, even during his two spells as joint Caretaker Manager with Steve Mildenhall - after the departures of Scott Lindsey and Jody Morris. Winning two of his three games in charge over the two spells is a decent calling card for a future in management, and it wasn’t a huge surprise when he got a third, longer spell as interim manager after the dismissal of Michael Flynn in January 2024.

After the appointment of Mark Kennedy, he was made “First Team Pathways Coach” - a new role that seemed mostly designed to keep him around the club despite not getting the permanent job.
