Signed in June 2022 on a season long loan from Championship Middlesbrough, his hometown club, goalkeeper Brynn was Town’s #1 throughout the 2022/23 season. Initially expected to compete with Lewis Ward for the starting jersey, Brynn impressed enough in pre-season that Ward was restricted to just two cup appearances before leaving the club to join Sutton United before the end of the summer transfer window.
After a shaky start in Town’s abysmal opening day loss at Harrogate led to a few premature concerns about his ranking on the Kovar-Benda loanee keeper scale (and even a few boos in his home debut), Brynn was man of the match in two of the next four games: the goalless draw at home against Salford and the 1-1 draw against Leyton Orient, who had won their first three games and rained 19 shots down on the Swindon goal after Jacob Wakeling’s early opener.
Over the first half of the season, Brynn’s form remained strong, with above average distribution and excellent shot-stopping. There remained occasional questions over his ability to command the box and come for crosses, but as an all-round package Brynn attracted significant praise and it was a great relief that he was not recalled during the January 2023 transfer window despite being linked with moves to higher level clubs.
From February onwards, Brynn’s form was less consistent, but that was also true of most of his teammates and he was never really challenged for the #1 jersey with number two Conor Brann seriously injured and academy keeper Josh Copland not considered ready for first team involvement. He finished the season having played every game in League Two and made one shy of 50 appearances across league and cup for Town, returning to Middlesbrough to continue his development. He won the club’s official Fans’ Player of the Season award after Frazer Blake-Tracy, who won the Adver award, was left off the shortlist.
