Player Profile

A 22 year-old Irish centre back signed on loan from Sheffield Wednesday ahead of the 22/23 season, Brennan seemed a good profile of player, with League One experience for the Owls, and Head Coach Scott Lindsey praised his passing ability in particular when the signing was announced.

Brennan’s debut came in the opening day 3-0 reverse against Harrogate, a game in which he was withdrawn in the 69th minute with Town trailing by two goals. He also started the home draw against Salford a week later, but was then dropped to the bench as Town switched from three at the back to two. Through the early part of the season, Brennan was in and out of the side, not helped by being one of two players sent off in Town’s Papa John’s Trophy defeat to Bristol Rovers, managing to pick up two yellow cards in the first half an hour of an essentially meaningless game. Whilst he had reasonable physical attributes, Brennan never quite convinced as a defender and his passing game was well short of what was expected.

After some speculation that he might be recalled to his parent club due to lack of game time in January, the arrival of Jody Morris (and the failure to secure a permanent replacement for Angus MacDonald) offered Brennan a chance to establish himself in the Town side in the early part of 2023: but unfortunately he was to become another member of Town’s centre back injury list.

Symmetrically enough, Brennan’s final appearance for Swindon was against the same opposition as his first: Harrogate Town, this time in the home fixture in late February. He was withdrawn at half time, having suffered a shoulder injury. The injury was initially reported to be only a minor setback, but the Owls decided to send Brennan for surgery on the joint which meant that he was not able to return before the end of the season.
