Brayley was signed by Roy Evans early in the 2001/2002 season on a short-term contract, after a successful pre-season trial spell, as cover for Grazioli and Sabin.

After Evans left, he became disillusioned with the lack of first-team opportunities, and nearly signed for Southend early in 2002, but he returned to the club to fight for a first team place. His return was short-lived however, as Andy King didn't offer him a new contract once his expired at the end of the season.
